The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Wellness and Events Center is a 240,000 SF 3-story building which will become the gateway to NJIT campus in Newark, NJ, while exemplifying the commitment of NJIT to the Mind and the Body. The basic concept is a daring unity of school-wide recreation, athlete-scholar and athletic department functions into one large integrated whole.
The building uses the field as a recurring launching point for the elements of the design. All the major circulation of the building takes its cues and is visible from the soccer field, or has views back to it. On the sports side, for the athletically minded, it includes a 3500 seat basketball arena, which can also be converted to convocation use, and is supplemented by 2 practice courts. At the base of the building nestles a 25m swimming pool with spectator bleachers, as well as a turf room at the top of the building for baseball practice.
At the top of the building lie the Athletic offices, including both offices for the various team coaches. The main offices overlook both the arena inside and the soccer field outside. There is an exterior path across the top of the soccer bleachers, and an interior path in the main 2-story concourse. This full northern façade is completely glass, canted out over the field, and with canted and angled V columns – all of these reinforce the notion of an athlete poised for action. The basic conceit of the building from this side is a modern Greek temple, with bleachers at the base, a glass center and a raised cornice which includes the soccer lights.
